Nursing Student Handbook

Examinations - Pharmacology Dosage Calculations

  • Every student will do their first dosage calculation proficiency exam with their Fundamentals of Pharmacology and Dosage Administration class.
  • The student will have up to 2 attempts to achieve 90% or better.
  • If 90% is achieved on the first attempt, no other attempt will be necessary.
    • If 90% is not achieved after 2 attempts, the student will have to repeat the Fundamentals of Pharmacology and Dosage Administration class.
  • In any subsequent clinical classes (Med Surge and Maternal Child), students will be given a Dosage Calculation Exam that needs to be passed with a 100% score to show medication proficiency at the clinical site.
    • If the test cannot be passed with a 100% score after two attempts, the student will not be able to pass medications at the clinical site resulting in a loss of those points for the clinical grade.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In some cases, the clinical facility may request the student to no longer participate at that clinical site because of their inability to pass the medication test. Every effort will be made to move the student to a different site, but it may affect the student’s ability to pass the clinical course.

Student Responsibility

  1. It is the student’s responsibility to prepare adequately for the Dosage Calculation Exam.
  2. Students are encouraged to seek tutoring or additional study resources before exam attempts.
  3. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in the delayed progression or inability to complete the nursing program.
