Grievance Procedure - for Student Complaints

Whenever possible, students are encouraged to resolve issues at an informal level by discussing the concern with the other party identified as causing or contributing to the complaint. An exception would be if they feel that informal discussion might place them in a compromising position or expose them to potential risk.

If a student feels faculty or a staff member has displayed racial or sexual discrimination or harassment, taken unfair disciplinary action, or treated the student unfairly in academic-related, work related, or any other matter, the student has the right to express her/his perceived unfair treatment and seek resolution through the informal or formal Student Grievance Procedure.

Informal Resolution Procedure

An informal resolution meeting is intended to address the issue with the appropriate individual(s) before filing a formal complaint. The student arranges a meeting with the person involved in the complaint and the direct supervisor of the person involved (if appropriate). This should be done within fifteen days of the alleged incident. If the informal process does not resolve the issue, a student may initiate the formal resolution procedure.

NOTE: If a nursing student has met with the faculty or staff member and needs to meet with the Director of Nursing (DON) please send an email to the Nursing Administrative Coordinator and ask to set up a meeting with the DON. fhuff@donnelly.edu The Administrator can schedule the meeting with the DON as a priority meeting if needed.

Formal Resolution Procedure

If students feel their complaint meets the guidelines of a formal grievance, they should complete the student grievance form (on the link below) within fifteen days of the incident or within seven days of the informal resolution procedure. The Grievance Form includes contact information, a description of the complaint, and the student's suggested action(s). The completed form will be automatically emailed to the Vice President of Student Affairs when they hit Submit. Students may be asked to provide documentation regarding their complaint.
