Disciplinary Process

Disciplinary action will be taken when a student engages in conduct that violates the academic, clinical, or professional standards of the Nursing Program.
The goal of the disciplinary process is to correct behavior, ensure safety, and support professional development.

Violations of the Code of Conduct May Lead to:

 From Faculty:

  1. A verbal warning documented in the student's file.
  2. A formal written warning which includes clear expectations for improvement with a timeline. Should include the student's signature and a date or a Reply if this is sent in the form of an email.

From the Nursing Oversite Committee:

  1. A Remediation or Probation contract from the Nursing Oversite Committee
    1. A written improvement plan with defined & measurable goals, that lists supporting resources, deadlines and consequences for non-compliance. Should include the student's signature and a date
  2. Dismissal from the nursing program - for repeated or severe violations. Requires review by the Director of Nursing and the college Dean.
  3. A report filed with state licensing boards (for licensed students)

NOTE: Steps may be bypassed depending on the severity of the student's violation.

Examples of Disciplinary Offenses Include:

  • Academic dishonesty (e.g., cheating, plagiarism)
  • Unsafe or unethical clinical practice
  • Breach of patient confidentiality (HIPAA violation)
  • Breach of student confidentiality (FERPA violation)
  • Disrespectful, harassing, or threatening behavior
  • Insubordination or repeated unprofessional conduct
  • Evidence of alcohol or drug use by the student will result in dismissal from the learning environment for a medical assessment. 
    Drug screening may be requested at any time. If drug screenings are positive, students will be dismissed from the program.
    1. Documentation of the medical assessment and follow-up recommendations must be submitted to the Director of Nursing.
    2. Failure to follow up with the Nursing Department’s requirements and recommendations will result in immediate dismissal from the program.

NOTE: All students have the right to appeal dismissals by submitting an academic appeal to the Director of Nursing and the Dean of the College within seven days of notification.
