Nursing Faculty Handbook 2026-27

Absences - Nursing Faculty

It is encouraged that personal leave time be scheduled between semesters.  If this is not possible, the faculty member should make an attempt not to miss clinical or class times.

Emergency Leave
Full-time Faculty and Adjunct Instructors do not receive PTO/Paid Time Off, (a standard practice in higher education environments).  Full-time Faculty, Adjunct Faculty and Staff who do not have PTO/Paid Time Off, are eligible for paid Emergency Leave for unexpected, critical situations. An Emergency Leave should be approved by the supervisor. It is important that the employee supervisor be contacted within 24 hours of the emergency. Signed medical statements from the medical facility will be required when appropriate.

Reporting Faculty Absences - Full-time Faculty & Adjunct Faculty

Faculty & Staff are expected to complete the Faculty Absence Notification Form and notify their supervisor, ahead of time if possible, when they are unable to instruct an assigned scheduled class, clinical, or simulation lab. Faculty & Staff should also make arrangements for a substitute instructor.

  • Unplanned Absences (e.g., illness or emergency)
  • Planned Absences (e.g., professional development or personal time)

Tardiness and Early Departure

  • Faculty are expected to be punctual and prepared and be available to students a minimum of 15 minutes before a class, clinical or simulation assignment begins.
  • Repeated tardiness or early departures without approval will be considered unprofessional conduct and are subject to review.

NOTE: Excessive or unreported absences may result in a performance review and may affect contract pay and employment.

Reporting Clinical Instruction Absences

Clinical instruction requires strict compliance with scheduled hours for student supervision, safety, and Board of Nursing regulations.
Faculty unable to attend a clinical day must:

  • Notify the Clinical Coordinator or Lab & Simulation Coordinator immediately and document the absence via Email.
  • Arrange appropriate coverage or submit a documented make-up plan.

NOTE: Be sure to submit an email that documents the clinical make-up plan and document any incidents or adjustments according to program policy.
