Short Term Disability
Benefit eligible employees should contact the Sun Life Short Term Disability Claims office to file a claim for physical, mental health or maternity situations when their physician indicates the employee should not be at work. Short term disability provides partial pay while a benefit eligible employee cannot work per their physician.

Short term disability will coincide with the FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) leave if the employee is eligible. A doctor’s notice must be provided. FMLA leave does not provide pay but protects the employee’s position and benefits for up to 12 weeks. (See the FMLA section of this handbook for more information).
There is a 1 week waiting period before short-term disability payments begin. Available PTO hours are required to be used during this period. If PTO hours remain available, those hours can be used to supplement short-term disability pay from Sunlife with pay from the Donnelly payroll up to a maximum of a combined total of 100% of the employees' weekly pay. Be sure to let the Donnelly Payroll Specialist know you want to supplement your pay with PTO hours.
