Academic Catalog

Online Course Attendance

Attendance in online courses for the week runs from Monday, 12:01 a.m. to Sunday, 11:59 p.m. Central Time. Though students will normally not be required to connect at specific times or on specific days, they will be expected to participate each week and complete assignments by the due dates, as instructed. Attendance in online courses is recorded as it is in on-ground courses.

Activities within each course that constitute active participation typically include, but are not limited to:

  • Making a substantial and relevant initial posting in an academic discussion forum;
  • Responding to another student’s post in an academic discussion forum;
  • Attempting a quiz, examination, exercise, or other activity required by the instructor;
  • Attending a synchronous class, lecture, recitation, or field or laboratory activity, physically or online, where there is an opportunity for interaction between the instructor and students;
  • Submitting an academic assignment;
  • Taking an assessment or an exam;
  • Participating in an interactive tutorial, webinar, or other interactive computer-assisted instruction;
  • Participating in a study group, group project, or an online discussion that is assigned by the institution

Faculty will determine whether a student has participated each week based on the guidelines above and record an attendance status weekly through the SIS the same as they would in a face-to-face course, by Sunday, at 11:59 p.m. each week. Students who have not participated during the add/drop period will be dropped from online courses as a no-show.

Logging into a course online, viewing the timeline or announcements, or emailing the instructor does not qualify as weekly participation. Students without substantive participation in course work does not count as having attended the course for the week and they will be counted as absent.
