Direct Assessment vs. Indirect Assessment

  • Direct Assessment refers to methods that require students to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, or behaviors. These are tangible, observable, and measurable outcomes—such as: Exams, papers, projects, performances, Faculty evaluations of student work
  • Indirect Assessment involves methods that reflect on student learning rather than directly showing it. These include: Surveys asking students what they believe they learned, Course evaluations, Alumni feedback or employer impressions, The key distinction is whether the assessment measures actual learning (direct) or perceptions of learning (indirect). Best practices recommend using both types to create a fuller picture of student achievement

Prerequisites, corequisite, concurrent

  • Prerequisite: Course, test scores, or other type of requirement that must have been taken in a prior term. Typically requires a passing score.
  • Corequisite: Course that is required to be taken at the same time as another course. For example, BL 101 has a corequisite of BL 1011.
  • Concurrent: Course may be taken at the same time as another course.
