FA 105 Music Appreciation

This course is an introduction to the history, styles, forms, and composers of music. There will be a primary focus on traditional Western European classical music, though elements of music in other cultures will be discussed as well. Students will have a brief overview of composers and their music, listen to musical examples, and discuss the study of music as related to thoughts, values, concerns, aesthetics, art, and society of people through the traditional Western eras of music.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of FA105, students will have the ability to:

1. Develop basic listening skills in the areas of melody, rhythm, texture, form, and style.
2. Describe the historical development of music.
3. Place the music studied against its social, cultural, and artistic background in order to show how it reflected the era in which it was composed.
4. Identify major musical forms and representative composers.
5. Use a basic vocabulary of music to describe their listening experiences.
6. Critically evaluate the role of music in their lives.
